CCJ - indigo on silk

I've been playing around with dying silk lately & am wondering why the natural indigo powder for hair will stain silk blue when it's just mixed with water when intructions for general cloth dying say that ingido must be fermented first.

Thanks for your help :)

Re: CCJ - indigo on silk

Indigo can be used as a 'one shot' dye in this way, any dye that is not taken up by the fabric is removed as a waste product so it's fairly inefficient. Historically indigo has been used this way in parts of Japan. The femented indigo dye vat is better suited to large projects that require some stability in the colour produced. It would be difficult and expensive to dye fibers or a large piece of cloth with Vashma indigo.
