Can I lighten henna/indigo hair

I have colored my hair with half henna half indigo several times now. The color is getting too dark for my liking. If I use just henna will it lighten the color? Thank you.

Re: Can I lighten henna/indigo hair

Well, speaking from my experience with using henna and indigo I can tell you that it will absolutely NOT lighten the color.  Henna does not lighten hair, it just adds color to it.  The parts colored with indigo will stay dark no matter what you do.  I even tried putting highlights over mine to lighten it after it got too dark and my highlights turned out a greenish blueish grayish color so I don't suggest using bleach either.  All that you can do is be sure not to add any indigo to the dark parts, only the roots, or if you want to lay off the indigo altogether you should do henna on the roots and just live with the darkness until it grows out.

Two people who lightened their indigo buildup without bleach:

Re: Can I lighten henna/indigo hair

Timely question, as I succesfully tried the Vitamin C packs suggested by a fellow forum member (magdalene?) and I have brand new pictures I can share.

Backstory:  I had done several "dark brunette" hendigoes:  1 part henna + 2 parts indigo.  I loved the cooler, darker brown I got.  Then last month I decided to try to lift a bit of the darkness in hopes to show more of the lovely henna "redness" now that summer is coming...

So, first I did 2 1-hour Vitamin C and shampoo "packs" one day, skipped a day, then repeated the 2 back-to-back 1-hr treatments (for a total of 4 Vitamin C and shampoo packs) on the third day.  I waited a couple of days, then applied a "redder" hendigo (2 parts Celebration henna + 1 part indigo) for 2 hours.  By now it's oxidized and settled, so I took pictures today.  I'm very happy with the results.  My dark brown is definitely lighter/redder/warmer than it was.  The difference is very subtle, so it's hard to capture it on pictures, but here are my photos comparing the change (see the last 7 images).

Thanking all who share their experiences and expertise on this forum, and hoping to "pay it forward" (at least a bit) with these pictures,

Thank you all for the advise. Xyz, your hair is just like mine. I will try the C trick.
